Yes,
Clickbank Pirate looks a bit cheesey with its pirate theme
and graphics, but don't be misled by this, under the hood
there's what I can only describe as the most powerful
affiliate engine I've ever come across -- and I don't
say this lightly (believe me, it takes a lot to get me
excited nowadays). Find out how you can get your share

What are Affiliate Programs?
Affiliate
Programs enable webmasters and web site owners to earn
revenue from their web sites through advertising goods
or services that match the content of their sites.
How
do they work?
The
merchant provides a special URL for the publishers site
to link to; this URL contains the tracking code specific
to the individual publisher. The links may take the form
of text, images or forms. Through the tracking code embedded
in the URL the merchant is able to keep track of where
visitors who buy come from, and so pay publishers their
commission.
Affiliate
Programs are only found online
Affiliate programs are now so widespread and used so widely
online, from large corporate sites to small amateur sites,
that they have become one of the main ways of doing business
online. In this the Internet is almost unique in having
affiliate programs. Any offline equivalent would be hard
pressed to include any kind of 'tracking code', so the
system could not function as an affiliate relationship.
Yet online it is easy to include tracking codes in URLs,
they are practically invisible to consumers and do not
usually affect the prices consumers pay for good or services.
So,
are affiliate programs a perfect revenue source?
Probably
the perfect revenue source doesn't exist. Affiliate programs
have their problems. There are merchants who don't pay,
people who replace your affiliate tracking code with their
own, and so on. On the whole though, affiliate programs
do work well and do provide hundreds of thousands of small
web site owners with good revenue from their sites.
Which
are the best affiliate programs?
A
hard question to answer, for it depends upon the purpose
of your site. In general you should look for affiliate
programs that offer some or all of the following characteristics.
Good
tracking and duration of cookies
You
want to still be able to earn from your site visitors
who don't buy on their first visit to the merchant's site.
If they return to the merchant's site later but not via
your link you want the merchant site to still recognise
them as 'your' visitor. Many affiliate programs do not
do this, and the difference to your revenue as a result
can be as much as 70% less.
Recurring
revenue
Recurring
revenue or residual revenue occurs when customers of the
merchant who initially bought through your affiliate link
buy again, buy repeating services, or buy new services
or goods. Some affiliate programs take account of this
and reward you appropriately (sometimes at a lower rate
than the percentage of the initial sale) but many don't.
This too can make a big diffference to the revenue you
earn. So, when comparing affiliate programs don't just
compare commission percentages, as this can give a very
false impression of the income you might make from particular
programs.
